For decades, Anglophones were sent Frenchspeaking judges who could not read our law reports and teachers who could
not teach in our language. We were told, in effect, that our difference was a problem to be administratively solved rather than a heritage to be respected.
I am a deacon of the Catholic Diocese of Buea, in the South-West Region of Cameroon, one of the two Englishspeaking
regions that have lived, since 2016, through what the world now calls the Anglophone Crisis. I have buried parishioners killed in crossfire. I have sat with mothers whose sons left for the bush and never returned, and with others whose sons returned, but not as the boys who left.
