HUMANISING THE ‘OTHER’ CONFLICT TRANSFORMATION IN SRI LANKA

Dialogue is not simply the exchange of opinions. True dialogue begins when we are willing to listen to life stories that we have never heard before. When we listen deeply, we begin to see the human being behind the word “other.”

W hat happens when we meet, face to face, someone whom we have been taught to fear?
This is not merely a philosophical question. It is an important question connected to Sri Lanka’s history, identities, relationships and everyday life. Sri Lanka is a country enriched by ethnic, religious, linguistic, cultural and social diversity. Yet, when we begin to see people not through their humanity but through the identities attached to them, this very diversity can become a source of suspicion and division.
