In August 1987, I started theology studies in Toronto, Canada. The troubles in Northern Ireland had been ongoing since October 1968. Canadians often asked me about these troubles. Would they lead toa full-scale civil war? Would they come to an end anytime soon? Was there any possibility of some kind of settlement emerging? My answer was along the lines that the only way forward that I could see was having a regional government in Northern Ireland based on power-sharing between those who identified as wanting to remain in the United Kingdom and those who aspired one day to live in a united Ireland.
