Given that survivors of sexual violence are often stigmatised by their communities and abandoned by their husbands, the JRS not only helps these women acquire financial autonomy through agricultural projects, but also by offering psychosocial support for better social reintegration.
In January 2008, the International Rescue Committee reported that approximately 5.4 million people died in the war-torn eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from 1998 to 2007. As the conflict worsens, the death toll is heavier today. The Congo war has lasted for approximately three decades.
